Course Structure

The top-up degree programme is for students who have successfully completed an HND or Foundation degree and wish to convert their existing qualification into a full BA honours. This one-year programme allows you to develop and refine your chosen specialist discipline. Teaching takes place in a studio setting where there is an emphasis on making and exploring fine art. Students will also be given the opportunity to study the critical and contextual dimensions of fine art practice in the form of weekly art lectures and workshops. The HNC and HND at KCC comprise stages one and two of a three-year programme of study. The BA top up is the third stage and will be characterised by the expectation for students to take responsibility for the direction of their work, encouraging a professional orientation that looks beyond the framework of the educational establishment. You will need to carry out independent research in the studio, at home and visiting galleries, plus written work produced outside of course hours. A range of assessment methods are used including group critiques, individual tutorials, marking of written assignments, a final show, etc. Students make a contribution to the collective costs of mounting the course exhibition. Progression Students may seek employment for example as artist, fine art photographer, professional printmaker; or become involved in curating, museum and gallery work, teaching, creative consultation, community arts work, arts management and administration or other areas of the creative industries. Applying for this course You will need to bring a substantial portfolio of work to interview and a selection of drawings from observation. In addition you will be asked to bring along a recent essay or other example of your written English e.g. an exhibition review.
