What you will learn

WordPress.Org is the most popular website builder in the world. This Web Design course takes you through the basics and covers all the useful features including how to use the fundamental tools. At the start of course, the tutor shows you how to obtain a website address (domain name) and install WordPress locally so that you’re ready to build a WordPress website that will work on different devices. You’ll add pages to your website and set up a blog/news page. We’ll then move onto inserting and editing content such as text, images and videos. It’s important to ensure your website is found by Google searches and that you understand how to build and change your website so it ranks well in Google and other search engines. Therefore this course is also an introduction to search engine optimisation techniques as well as how to add social media to your website. This beginners WordPress.org course is taught in small groups and you do not require any prior knowledge of WordPress to attend this course. If you are not entitled to a reduced fee but are finding it difficult to pay for your course in one go, we can offer a Staged Payment Agreement to split the costs into three payments if your course(s) costs £200 or more. Please talk to a member of enrolment staff about how your payments would be structured. You are liable for all payments under this agreement, even if you stop attending your class.

By the end of the course you will be able to

  • Install, set up and update WordPress locally.
  • Introduce key concepts of writing for the web and make the site search-engine friendly.
  • Add webpages, blog posts, images, maps and videos, install widgets and plugins.
  • Customise attractive design templates ensuring a responsive, mobile friendly design.
  • Introduce you to basic website coding.
  • Add contact forms, maps, online shopping and payment methods.
  • Add social networking, track visitors and prevent spam.
  • Introduce the selection and registration of a domain name and website hosting service.
  • Know how to transfer your completed website from your local computer to a hosting environment.

Class format and activities

The class will be taught online at a specific course time each week using MS Teams. You will learn via a mix of presentation, active learning exercises, assignments, demonstrations, hand-outs, step-by-step instructions, pair working and group discussion. One-to-one tuition will be given to help develop ideas and skills. There are many advantages to learning in an online environment - benefit from anytime-access to an archive of course materials, resources and links to help you with projects and assignments. Gain instant support and answers to questions via forums and receive one to one tutor and peer support. All Morley College students receive a generous discount on Adobe CC Software (see below) and a free Microsoft Office account with Email, MS Teams, Office Apps and much more!

Manageable project work will be assigned between and during classes to help you progress. The classes are informal and allow for question and answer sessions, technical advice and support depending on your needs. You will receive regular assessment and feedback on your progress. You will work as a class, in small break out groups; in pairs and one-to-one with your tutor. All course material will be instantly accessible via the learning platform and the sessions may be recorded so that you may return to them later. This will only be done with group consent. Learners will be encouraged to use the class forums to engage with each other during the class and to support each other with project work between classes if required.

In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.

Entry requirements

A keen interest in the subject and the ability to attend the sessions regularly is key to your success. As part of the course you will be asked to read material, take notes, listen to instructions and discuss related topics, therefore students should have a reasonable level of skill in speaking, reading and writing in English.

If you are not entitled to a reduced fee but are finding it difficult to pay for your course in one go, we can offer a Staged Payment Agreement to split the costs into three payments if your course(s) costs £200 or more. What you need to know before you enrol

It would be helpful if you have some familiarity with Macintosh and/or PC computers and know how to use standard menus and commands, however this is not an essential requirement as these skills can be picked up during the course. As this is a course primarily delivered on computers; students will be encouraged to be aware of fatigue and eye strain and take breaks when necessary. Your tutor will therefore build in project assignments, reconvening as a group to share the progress of work. Information about computers and the relevant software will be provided by the tutor.

What you will need for your class

To get the most from your learning it would be helpful to have your own camera and lens. Your camera should allow you access to manual controls. If you are learning software, it would be of benefit to possess the software for use at home. As a student of Morley College you are entitled to a generous discount on Adobe CC Software. It would be helpful for you to have a pen and notepad, as you may wish to take notes. Also recommended is a storage device such as USB Memory stick (minimum 8GB) mini-hard drive or access to a cloud storage service.
