What you will learn

Create textiles in a stimulating and supportive environment in a specialist textiles studio with a dye garden. Develop your own projects with a view to exhibiting and working to commission. Special attention will be given to sustainability, research, design, exhibitions and current textiles practice. A series o workshops, demonstrations and presentations will be offered to explore textile techniques. This course is suitable for those with an independent outlook and advanced textiles experience, such as a degree, or who have completed the Textiles Foundation course and want to further their practice. The group hold in year or end of year exhibitions and participate in other creative opportunities arising through collaborations with other visual departments at Morley and connections with V&A, Kew, The Garden Museum, The South London Botanical Institute, Westminster library and R.K. Burt Gallery. Entry is by informal interview in person or by phone/email, with a (digital) portfolio of recent work.

By the end of the course you will be able to

  • Develop your own historical and practical research for individual themes and ideas.
  • Investigate a range of print and dye processes.
  • Use a variety of constructed techniques and hand stitch.
  • Develop your own individual textile practice.
  • Explore sustainable principles to embed in your own studio practise

Class format and activities

There are a series of (optional) focus sessions on different textile techniques each term. There is an optional project to link all the focus sessions together. Visits to current exhibitions arranged when appropriate. Group discussions, Q & A, introductions to new materials and techniques, practical help with equipment and materials.

In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.

Entry requirements

You should have completed the Textile Foundation course at Morley College, or a BA in Textiles, or City & Guilds Certificate, or a Diploma in a Textile subject - evidence of work - informal interview with tutor.

What you need to know before you enrol

The Textile Studio is on the second floor of the building and we will also be using the college dye garden, a reasonable level of fitness is required. The class is situated on the second floor of the Nancy Sear Building. There is partial disabled access via a lift to the first floor and a stair lift to the second. Students are expected to comply with physical distancing guidance. The studio has been adapted to be a Covid safe working environment with a safe, limitedmaximum of learners. Students are asked to bring a shirt or lab coat to wear and wash between sessions and to wash their hands before and after using shared equipment. We strongly advise that you bring and wear a face protector.
