What you will learn
A practical introduction to Indian Head Massage for students with little or no knowledge or experience of massage. Students must be prepared to have other students practice on them. By the end of the course you will be able to
- List 2 benefits of Indian head massage
- List 2 contra-indications of Indian head massage
- List 2 important hygiene issues when giving Indian head massage
- Adjust your technique to suit different skin types, hair types/textures, ages and health situations: thus respecting equality and diversity
- Perform basic Indian head massage techniques on shoulders, neck, scalp and face
- Perform a 10 minute treatment on a fellow student
Class format and activities
You will learn how to relax another person and be relaxed too. You must be prepared to have other students practice on you so everyone can experience different hair and skin types. You will give each other feedback: enabling self-evaluation and self-reflection. Assessment is continuous through tutor observation, with questions and answers, checking for learning.
Constructive and supportive feedback from your tutor will help you succeed during the class.
There are no academic entry requirements to do this course. Anyone with little or no previous knowledge or experience of massage can do this course. Anyone with an interest in massage and its practice as a complementary therapy can do this course.
What you need to know before you enrol
You must be able to stand comfortably for approximately 30 minutes. Students must be prepared to have other students practice on them: not mind being touched on the face, head, neck, shoulders, hands and arms. All techniques must be carried out in accordance with the tutor’s instructions for health and safety reasons.
What you will need for your class
Bring paper and pen to take notes with. Bring antiseptic wipes to wipe your hands with. Bring a soft small cushion and small towel for the head. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes. Have clean washed hair and clean hands. If you have long hair, bring hair elastic / clips to hold up your long hair. No jewellery: any jewellery worn must be removed during the practice treatments.
What you can do next
After the course you can practice what you learnt on others. For those who want to go further in Morley College, you can do a Diploma in Indian Head Massage.
