What you will learn

Have you ever wondered what is inside a tailored jacket? On this two day course you will learn how to construct the hidden layers that produce and maintain a beautiful jacket structure and shape. Create and keep the shape using interfacings, interlinings, padding and canvas, and master the techniques used. A materials pack will be provided for this course at a cost of £35

By the end of the course you will be able to

  • to identify the materials required for perfectly set sleeve and shoulder pad
  • to set the sleeve head correctly
  • to set and support a sleeve correctly
  • to attach a shoulder pad correctly

Class format and activities

After examining and discussing examples and samples, the tutor will demonstrate a variety of materials and appropriate construction, stitching and finishing techniques. Teaching is both to the whole class and on an individual, one-to-one basis using demonstrations, discussion, examples, samples, handouts and other technical support material where appropriate.

In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.

Entry requirements

This is a Beginners Course. , , Before you enrol, you must have achieved the following: , , • Use pattern lays, grainline and selvedge, • Be able to thread up and use a sewing machine, • Be able to follow beginners pattern instructions, • Completed at least 1 garment using a commercial pattern, • Students must be able to read, write and understand fluent English, • Mathematics and numeracy skills are desirable but not essential

What you need to know before you enrol

•This course is very intensive; punctuality and good attendance are necessary. •Cutting fabric can involve standing at high tables. Please let your tutor know if this is difficult for you. •Sewing machines have a foot operated speed control. •The fashion studios are on the first floor of the Nancy Seear Building and there is wheelchair access via a stair-lift. •Please also note: there is no eating or drinking allowed in the fashion studios – no liquids at all are allowed.

What you will need for your class

• a basic sewing kit: sharp fabric scissors, trimming scissors, paper scissors, tape measure, dressmaker’s pins • tracing wheel, a selection of sewing threads, hand sewing needles, unpicker, thimble, tailor’s chalk • notebook, pens, pencils Also: • at the start of the course, you must purchase a pack of specialised materials from the tutor for no more than £30 • you will need to purchase a sewing machine bobbin from your tutor for £1, refundable at the end of the course
