What you will learn
A practical introduction to the fundamentals of therapeutic massage. Learn the basic massage movements and a short routine to use with family and friends. Using the application of oils, you will be able to gain an insight into how massage can alleviate stress and promote relaxation and healing through touch. An excellent introduction for those wishing to develop a new skill or follow on to accredited courses. If you have a medical condition for which massage is not appropriate or contraindicated please contact the department before enrolling for advice. please bring along a sheet two large towels, wet wipes and grapeseed or almond oil.
By the end of the course you will be able to
- Know the effects and benefits of different massage strokes
- Know when you should not treat a person with massage and understand hygiene issues relating to giving massage
- Be able to select and use appropriate oils and equipment
- Perform a full body massage routine
Class format and activities
You will be watching demonstrations and both giving and receiving massage treatments with fellow students. You will also take part in class discussion and groupwork
In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.
No previous knowledge is necessary but an interest in complementary health and touch therapies would be preferable
What you need to know before you enrol
Please no NOT enrol if you are on medication or being treated for a medical condition by your doctor, or if you have a history of back or joint injuries, or there is any chance that you could be pregnant. You also need to ensure that you have no contagious conditions e.g. athletes foot.

What you will need for your class
A sheet, two large towels, non scented plant based oil e.g. sweet almond or grapeseed. You will also need to be appropriately dressed to both give and receive massage (e.g. polo shirt and loose fitting trousers - not jeans, trainers) You will also need writing materials and a folder
