What you will learn

Develop your musicianship skills, including rhythm, melody and harmony through navigating music scores and analysing basic structures. Suitable for musicians with knowledge of music theory at Grade 6 or above, who play an instrument and can read music fluently.

By the end of the course you will be able to

  • Navigate a score and identify key structural features
  • Develop understanding of musical form
  • Gain a deeper understanding of key relationships and the tonal layout of music
  • Analyse chord progressions and understand functionality of chords
  • Develop knowledge of rhythmic and melodic characteristics of music

Class format and activities

This is a live online face to face course.
The course will involve listening to recordings, score reading, and analysis, as well as practical exercises on instruments / voice.

In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.

Entry requirements

You will need to be familiar with music theory to at least ABRSM Grade 6 or equivalent, i.e. you should have a good understanding of scales and chords. Students should also be willing to sight-read and play music from scores.

What you need to know before you enrol

Achievement on your course will be measured by whether you meet the following learning outcomes. At the start of the course you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your own personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and future goals.
Excellent attendance and punctuality is required from all students. This course requires study/completion of activities outside of class time.

What you will need for your class

You will need to bring a pencil, erasor and manuscript paper, and an instrument.
To join this online class you will need a good internet connection and computer/tablet with webcam and sound.
