What you will learn
Yoga is a process of self-development that engages body, mind and breath. It offers a long-term investment in your own well-being. The aim of this particular course is to help you establish sound and meaningful practice in foundation poses, so that you can steadily build your physical capabilities and move towards a calmer sate of mind. The Iyengar approach emphasizes the importance of working with precision in the practice of the poses. The course is suitable for newcomers to yoga; those who wish to refresh their understanding of the Iyengar method and those with experience of other styles of yoga who would like to experience this approach.
By the end of the course you will be able to
- explain in your own terms what you understand the purpose of yoga to be, and how the practice of poses, or asanas, relates to this
- demonstrate symmetry and correct alignment in the practice of a range of poses that includes standing poses, forward bends, back bends, balances and twists
- demonstrate improvements in strength and stamina
- demonstrate improvements in flexibility
- show some insight into how your own body works, and an awareness of how to focus your own practice in order to improve it
- experience some degree of mental quietness through observing your breath
Class format and activities
Weekly timetabled face to face sessions in College. Each person will learn how to work in the poses according to individual need, capability and prior experience making use of props, where appropriate, as advised by the tutor. You will also: Watch demonstrations by the tutor; Follow instructions in order to attempt the poses yourself; Learn how to use props, where appropriate, to assist you in the performance of the poses; Observe each other for the purposes of understanding and learning key points; Reflect on your learning by contributing to question and answer sessions with the tutor.
In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.
This course is suitable for people of all ages who want to overcome the wear and tear of daily life and/or the ageing process. If you are interested in overcoming stiffness, improving mobility, building stamina, improving your sense of balance, relieving tension and achieving some peace of mind this course is for you.
What you need to know before you enrol
You don't need to be ‘in shape’ at the start of the course. Teaching will be adjusted to take account of individual students’ capabilities. You will benefit most from the course if you can practise at home what you have learned in the class. The course is not suitable for people who have recently undergone surgery, who have a profound medical condition or who are pregnant. What you will need for your class
Wear leggings and a T-shirt. These should be sufficiently close fitting for the tutor to see and understand how your body is working. Avoid clothing that is immodest. Don’t wear jewellery, as this can affect practice adversely and cause health and safety issues. Bring an additional layer of loose clothing and socks to keep you warm at the end of the session. You can bring something to drink before and after class, but drinks shouldn't be taken during classes. Don't eat for some time before your session is due to start. Whilst the college holds a stock of yoga mats, it's a good idea to invest in your own for hygiene reasons (and so that you can practise at home!). The tutor will guide you as to what kind to buy during the first session of the term.
