What you will learn

Discover and learn a variety of hip-hop and other forms of street, party and club dance, exploring their origins, their contemporary formations and the power and inventiveness of their freestyle (improvisational) nature.
Achievement on your course will be measured by whether you meet the following learning outcomes. At the start of the course you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your own personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and future goals i.e. progression to an advanced-level course

By the end of the course you will be able to

  • Have familiarised yourself with a range of key dance techniques appropriate to the dance style
  • Have practised how to perform the dance techniques learnt with proficiency
  • Demonstrate poise and a dynamic energy appropriate to the style
  • Play with the dance action learnt, using your own imagination and creative flare to increase your ability and sense of fun

Class format and activities

Mode of delivery: online plus [link above].
Class activity will include: Physical demonstration by tutor of target dance movement with guided student practise Individual, paired and small-group learning tasks

For sessions when students will be participating in class remotely, via live-stream link-up – and thus joining fellow students located in-studio, you will be guided how to adapt studio-based exercises in order to participate effectively throughout the class.

In order to ensure you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular constructive and supportive feedback from your tutor.
The tutor will also set assessment activities involving student exchange of ideas and student self-assessment for all students, whether you are participating in-studio or via live-stream.

The course will be delivered live via MS Teams (when attending remotely) and may include a series of support material such as video recaps and/or practical tasks provided via any of the online platforms supported by the College (Moodle, MS stream, etc)

Constructive and supportive feedback from your tutor will help you succeed during the class.

Entry requirements

These sessions are open to students with previous experience of the dance style being learnt, to those new to the form and to those who are new to dance study in general. Your tutor can modify activity to suit beginners or those with less experience as well as those who are already proficient.

What you need to know before you enrol

Excellent attendance and punctuality will be required from all students. This course may include some completion of activities outside of class time.

Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing & & footwear (no outdoor footwear) , Pen and notebook , Bottled water
