What you will learn

This fun and creative dance course will teach you new dance skills. Learn how to express yourself through movement on your own and with other students. At the end of the course you will take part in a dance performance. The tutor will give you regular feedback about your progress. All courses for adults with learning disabilities require an interview and assessment with the Learning Disability Co-ordinator before enrolment. By the end of the course you will be able to

  • Work with safe body alignment.
  • Increased body awareness and confidence in movement
  • Move more dynamically in space
  • Put a sequence of movements together through improvisation
  • Perform a dance
  • Observe other people moving
  • Learn basic dance terms and technique

Class format and activities

Participate in a group warm up, explore ways of moving in space using: different directions, level changes, jumping, turning and balancing, work creatively through improvisation on different movement themes each term, work as part of a large group, in smaller groups and in pairs, perform your dances and observe others moving, stretch at the end of each session., In addition to your dance practice, study can include the use of digital resources such as film & photography, useful websites and connection with online communities of interest via social media to enhance your learning., Dance study offers a range of benefits including being an enjoyable way to increase fitness whilst enhancing wellbeing. Dance practice at Morley can also serve to enhance skills relevant for employment by means of encouraging increased confidence, physical dexterity and concentration.

In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.

Entry requirements

Learning support will need to be contacted prior to attending for an initial assessment of your specific learning needs and requirements. This will provide an opportunity to let us know if you will be coming to Morley College independently or whether you will be supported by a support worker.

What you need to know before you enrol

No, everyone is advised to work within their own body limitations at all times. Photography and film recording of class activities may be used in order to aid learning. These images may also be used for publicity or marketing materials produced by Morley College, both online and in print. You will have the opportunity to either confirm or decline consent to being filmed or photographed.

What you will need for your class

Please wear comfortable clothes you can move easily in and comfortable footwear like trainers. If you would like something other than water to drink, which we provide, please bring a drink, for a 5 minute break we incorporate into the session.
