What you will learn

The aim of this introductory course is to get you familiar with your DSLR camera and equipment, while experimenting photographing different subjects.

By the end of the course you will be able to

  • Getting to know your digital camera
  • Know about the variety of lenses and equipment
  • Use manual modes and the triangle of exposure (shutter speed, aperture and ISO)
  • Experimenting with focusing and metering modes
  • Understand depth of field and capturing motion

Class format and activities

With a combination of theory and a lot of practise, you will be able to gain control of their DSR camera and understand the fundamentals of shooting in manual modes. You will be presented a variety of photographic examples from all genres of photography in order to understand techniques and styles. You will be practising and shooting in class and on nearby location.

Constructive and supportive feedback from your tutor will help you succeed during the class.

Entry requirements

This is a course for beginners or those who have not practised using their camera for a while and would like to refresh their knowledge and skills.

What you need to know before you enrol

The Photography Studio is at the Morley Chelsea Centre, Hortensia Road SW10 in the Carlyle building, room CG04 on the ground floor.

What you will need for your class

Your own DSLR camera or mirrorless camera with its lens allowing access to manual controls. Also bring an empty memory card and fully-charged battery ready to start shooting. A notepad is advisable to keep notes as well as your camera manual.
