Our HND (Higher National Diploma) in Photography is a stimulating course that presents students with the opportunity to develop as professional self-reflecting individuals. It is a nationally recognized level 5 qualification, which is equivalent to the second year of a degree course, and offers versatile skills that meet the needs of the rapidly evolving contemporary creative industry environment. The course is offered as full-time (2 days per week over 1 year), or part-time (1 day per week over 2 years).
Emphasis throughout the course will be on refining research skills, analytical thinking and conceptual development, whilst exploring contemporary photographic practices.
By the end of the course you will be able to
- Apply research and planning techniques, to develop a photographic strategy, in response to a given brief.
- Produce photographic images exploiting camera and lighting techniques.
- Process and create photographic images using traditional and post-production techniques.
- Present a strong body of photographic work through an online platform.
As this is an online plus course, the practical aspects of the different Units will be delivered in Chelsea Centre with social distancing, while the theoretical ones, as well as group and individual tutorials will be delivered online, using Microsoft Teams.
All course materials (project briefs, background notes, handouts, you tube videos, links to galleries etc.) will be available online and accessible via our Virtual Learning Environment, Moodle. Recordings of online presentations will be available on Microsoft Teams. Students will also have remote access to a number of Adobe apps related to the course, such as Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom.
Your progress towards achieving the learning outcomes will be reviewed regularly. Throughout the course you will be greatly encouraged and entirely supported to reach your full potential with constructive feedback provided by your tutor.
At the end of your studies you will have the opportunity to exhibit a body of your photographic work and to promote yourself in your chosen pathway. Throughout your journey you will be urged to work independently, while our experienced photographic team will continuously support you.
In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.
Applicants should have previously completed a level 4 Higher National Certificate (HNC) program, as the Higher National Diploma (HND) is a continuation of the HNC course.
GCSEs, grade 4/C or above, in Maths and English (or an equivalent level of qualification) is desirable. For non-native English speakers, an IELTS 5.5 is required. You will also need to have a digital portfolio of your own photographic work (16-20 images) that you will present/discuss in your online interview.
