What you will learn

Draw and paint outside in the environs in and around Morley College. Learn how to plan and contain composition and perspective for urban landscape using a range of media and colour. This course will enable to you to gain confidence to study outside. The college will be open for use of the studio, toilets and hand washing.
Student numbers are limited to 6 and social distancing will apply

By the end of the course you will be able to

  • Identify the main forms in urban landscape through observational drawing and water-based painting
  • Use a range of observation techniques to broaden your understanding of perspective and composition
  • Use combinations of charcoal, pastel, graphites and paint
  • Convey form though light and tone and cast shadow
  • Study the compositional elements of sky, middle ground and foreground
  • Experiment with composition and 'atmospheric landscape'

Class format and activities

You will be introduced to a range of sequential (optional) landscape sketching techniques. The class will spend the majority of time outside in different spaces with a range of viewpoints. The emphasis will be on creating a series of studies outside. There maybe some studio work depending on the weather

Constructive and supportive feedback from your tutor will help you succeed during the class.

This is a mixed ability class which facilitates beginners and more experienced learners

What you need to know before you enrol

This course is offered onsite at Morley during Covid 19 restrictions. Student numbers are limited to 6 and social distancing will apply. You will need to supply all your own materials (please see below), and to wear a mask when working indoors.

What you will need for your class

Please bring sketchbooks and your own drawing and painting materials. You might want to bring watercolour paper for wet work. A folding seat is useful and a bottle for water. Please bring examples of work if you have any.If the weather is forecast to rain we can shelter and continue to work outside or return to the studio if particularly inclement
