Course Structure

Music is very closely tied to our history and tradition at Morley, from our connections to classical composers Gustav Holst, Michael Tippett and Ralph Vaughan Williams, to our well-established choirs, jazz bands and orchestra. We also have excellent studio facilities including an SSL-based recording studio, so whether your interests lie in music production or performance, we have your needs covered.

You'll benefit from our rich and diverse music culture through participation in a wide range of activities such as workshops, ensembles and concerts, as well as exciting opportunities to visit festivals and gigs backstage to get a feel for the production of shows. You'll learn in small groups through both classroom teaching and practical projects using industry-standard equipment, with guidance from industry professionals. We’ll help you find your greatest musical passion and prepare you for a career in the music industry of today and tomorrow.

The course is modular, allowing some individual choice so you can customise your own journey. Course activities include technical work such as studio production, sound design, live sound, and composition for film. You'll cover musical elements including aural training, composition, song writing, and solo and band performance. Finally, you'll also put into practice principles of music business, marketing, and events management, so whatever your musical life may throw at you, you can do it with confidence.

By the end of the course you will be able to

  • play, produce, and record music in a variety of contemporary musical styles
  • develop and apply technical and musical language to your own work and that of others
  • understand and apply rehearsal, performance and studio techniques
  • work effectively with others in performances and recording sessions
  • make use of a wide range of music production software such as Logic Pro, Ableton, Sibelius, etc
  • complete a portfolio of recordings, performances, and/or compositions.

• The course will involve a range of teaching methods, including seminars, lectures, group discussions and tutorials
• Regular lessons will be enriched further by workshops by visiting artists; previous guest artists have included Mark Lettieri, Joel Cadbury, and multi-Grammy Award winning band Snarky Puppy
• You will work on practical projects to develop your music performance or production skills
• Lessons will involve both individual and group work
• Opportunities to take part in public performances will be available throughout the year.

In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.
