Course Structure

To recognise and to foster talent. This is at the heart of everything we do, from enabling students to make fashion their career to recruiting industry professionals to impart their wealth of knowledge to the next generation. Your studies on the HND Art & Design (Fashion) 2 year course at Morley College will enable you to push the boundaries of your creativity in conceptual fashion design and experimental textiles, underpinned by a solid foundation of practical skills.
Our curriculum has been developed to respond to the needs of industry, supported by dedicated fashion and textile studios to provide you with access to professional standard equipment including industrial sewing machines and K&L stands alongside modern digital resources such as photography equipment, 3D printers, and Gerber Technology.
You will be supported in your studies by our team of expert practitioners - tutors and technicians, each of whom are specialists, covering a wide range of fields. Visits from guest lecturers and industry contacts provide context for the real-life application of learning in professional settings.
Our students have successfully engaged with industry professionals on projects including:
• A summer internship with a London Fashion Week designer, creating runway samples from original designs
• Costume design projects for local theatre groups, designing and creating costumes for dance and theatre performances
• Assisting a professional fashion stylist on an editorial fashion project
• Participation in our Annual Catwalk Show

By the end of the course you will be able to

  • Create a portfolio of your own designs through research, experimentation and illustration
  • Interpret your design drawings into 3D through pattern cutting, draping on the stand and garment construction
  • Complete textile samples through practical making skills in a range of textile processes
  • Use digital tools in 2D and 3D to develop fashion projects
  • Conduct research and formulate responses to contemporary and historical fashion topics
  • Discuss personal career goals in relation to the range of roles and opportunities in the creative industries

Achievement on your course will be measured by completion of assignments reflecting real world scenarios in a diverse range of formats, including:
• Sketchbook and portfolio
• Written assignments
• Finished garments, Patterns, and Toiles
• Textiles
• Computer Aided Design
• Digital and Live Presentations
Your progress towards achieving the learning outcomes will be reviewed throughout the course. At the start of the course you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your own personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and future goals i.e.: progression to another course.
Our Online Plus delivery model provides ample opportunities to engage with course material while developing vital transferable skills for online working. Our user-friendly digital teaching and learning resources incorporate Microsoft Office 365 and Microsoft Teams. Moodle resources for every course unit support taught sessions and independent study alongside a robust online Fashion Library, with useful tutorial clips, research materials and informational handouts, created to help you stretch your skills further.
For in-centre workshops, you will benefit from access to individual work areas. In the fashion studio each work area comes complete with industrial sewing machine, K&L stand, cutting tables and ironing station. In our CAD Studio you will have individual Apple Mac workstations with a full Adobe software package and individual laptops for Gerber Technologies. You will also have access to computers, scanners and printers for independent study in the College’s learning centre.

In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.
