What you will learn
This course offers a sustained approach to developing core strength, range of movement, and overall co-ordination skills working with the Pilates method. Practical work involving exercising with the Pilates method. Students will learn how to develop co-ordination skills, effective breathing, postural awareness, core strength, flexibility and mobility. Tutor demonstrations and coaching instructions will be provided for all exercises. There will be plenty of opportunities to ask questions, receive individual advice on technique, and learn about how the core muscles work. Visual materials in the form of hand-outs and power point presentations are included as part of some lessons.
By the end of the course you will be able to
- How to align the spine
- Locate and engage core strength to effectively support spine and posture
- Practise Lateral Breathing, which helps with effective use of the core strength
- Co-ordinate movements using the Pilates method
- Practice a sequence of exercises of increasing intensity working with the Pilates method
- Increase mobility, flexibility and range of movement
- Understand how Pilates is relevant to posture, everyday movement, and fitness activity
Class format and activities
Exercises and activities to develop core strength, postural awareness, flexibility, mobility, co-ordination skills, effective breathing. Tutor demonstrations and coaching instructions will be provided for all exercises. There will be plenty of opportunities to ask questions, receive individual advice on technique, and learn about how to effectively engage the core muscles work.
In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.
A basic level of fitness and willingness to engage both mind and body whilst exercising. Any student suffering from an injury or condition that could be made worse by exercise, should consult with their Doctor or Physical Therapist before beginning the course. Adaptations and modifications can be provided to suit different injuries and conditions, if unsure please contact the departmental administrator. This course is not suitable for women who are pregnant.
