What you will learn

Therapeutic approach to Pilates that works on core strength, co-ordination skills, mobility and flexibility to improve posture and target quality of movement in every day life and fitness activity. This course offers a gradual approach towards exercising with the Pilates technique. Exercises are broken down into simple components and worked using deep slow movements. This enables students to effectively connect with developing core strength, toning the major muscle groups of the body and improving the overall quality of their movement. As the course progresses, more advanced options will be offered in some exercises as appropriate to students' ability.

By the end of the course you will be able to

  • Align the spine and engage core muscles to support posture
  • Practise effective breathing
  • Co-ordinate simple movements using the Pilates method, including effective breathing
  • Tone and strengthen your body with precise fluid movements
  • Increase muscular strength, mobility and flexibility
  • Be aware of a mind/body connection in Pilates exercises

Class format and activities

Exercises and activities to develop core strength, postural awareness, flexibility, mobility, co-ordination skills, effective breathing. Tutor demonstrations and coaching instructions will be provided for all exercises. There will be plenty of opportunities to ask questions, receive individual advice on technique, and learn about how to effectively engage the core muscles work.

In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.

Entry requirements

A basic level of fitness and willingness to engage both mind and body whilst exercising. Any student suffering from an injury or condition that could be made worse by exercise, should consult with their Doctor or Physical Therapist before beginning the course. Adaptations and modifications can be provided to suit different injuries and conditions, if unsure please contact the departmental administrator. This course is not suitable for women who are pregnant.

What you need to know before you enrol

Much of the work in this course will be done lying on exercise mats on the floor if this is likely to pose a problem please consult with the department administrator prior to enrolling. See also section 3 Entry Requirements.
