What you will learn

The construction beautiful gowns whether for the altar or Oscars! Bridal and Evening Wear share many similar techniques.
You will be able to build on your existing knowledge and develop more advanced construction and finishing skills produce these beautiful garments.
This course will focus on the difficult and challenging features used when constructing a bridal/evening gown. A different set of techniques is taught each week from relatively simple ones building towards more complex over the term. You will produce your own reference work of samples, notes and hand outs.
You must have achieved advanced level in garment construction.

It is essential that you read the entry requirements carefully.

By the end of the course you will be able to

  • sew advanced fabric types and trimmings
  • cut advanced fabrics
  • use advanced construction methods
  • use advanced finishing skills
  • create supporting foundations
  • solve problems and develop independent thinking

Class format and activities

Teaching is as a whole class, in pairs, small groups and on an individual basis. Demonstrations, discussions, examples, samples, hand-outs and other technical support materials are used where appropriate. Students are encouraged to work independently and learn from each other.
In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.
Attendance and punctuality are crucial. You will not achieve the desired learning outcomes if you cannot attend fully. You must inform your tutor for the reasons for any lateness or absences.

Entry requirements

This course is a great follow-on from an intermediate clothes making course, suitable if you have completed two or more intermediate level courses.
Before you enroll you must have achieved:
• Intermediate level of construction techniques and finishing.
• Understand grainline, notches and balance marks.
• Be competent at threading and using a sewing machine.
• Students must be able to read, write and understand fluent English.
• Maths and numeracy skills are essential.

This course is not suitable for beginners.

What you need to know before you enrol

This is a mixed level class you need to be willing to work together with others at different levels. Advanced students will be expected to work more independently.
Working on patterns, cutting fabric and fitting can involve standing at high tables. Please let your tutor know if this is difficult for you. Sewing machines have a foot operated speed control.
The fashion studios are on the first floor of the Nancy Sear Building and there is lift access.
Please also note: there is no eating or drinking allowed in the fashion studios – bottled water is allowed.

What you will need for your class

Fabric scissors, trimming scissors, paper scissors, a tape measure, dress maker pins, a selection of needles and threads. Notebook, folder and pen.

Also: Also, at the start of the course you will be required to buy a fabric pack to complete the exercises at a cost of no more than £20, paper and card are available to use in the studio.
