Kathak Performance Project
What you will learn
Building on your Kathak skills, this course prepares students for solo, duo and group performance. You will be involved in the choreographic process of a new dance piece, which will be created for the project. You will have the opportunity to take part in a public performance at the end of the course. Class is accompanied by a tabla player for some sessions. Please note: the course is suitable for those enrolled on Kathak: Intermediate. For students new to Kathak study at Morley, two years previous experience is required. By the end of the course you will be able to
- Perform a dance item at the Summer Dance concert at Morley College.
- Have an understanding of the music used for the dance performance.
- Understand some basic principles of choreography in the context of Kathak.
- Have Learnt about the relationship of the individual to the group in a group performance.
Class format and activities
Be learning and practising some set arrangements of movements.
Have the opportunity to contribute in terms of ideas and movements for inclusion in the item.
Work as part of the whole class and sometimes in smaller groups.
In addition to your dance practice, study can include the use of digital resources such as film & photography, useful websites and connection with online communities of interest via social media to enhance your learning.
Dance study offers a range of benefits including being an enjoyable way to increase fitness whilst enhancing wellbeing. Dance practice at Morley can also serve to enhance skills relevant for employment by means of encouraging increased confidence, physical dexterity and concentration.
In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.
Approximately a year’s training in Kathak. For students with previous experience of dance the time span may be reduced.
Online enrolment on term 3 of this course, starting in April 2017, is only available to those enrolled in the previous term. What you need to know before you enrol
The course will help develop strength and stamina but a basic level of fitness is required to be able to undertake continuous exercise for about an hour with a short break for stretching and a drink of water. The dancers are required to dance in bare feet.
Photography and film recording of class activities may be used in order to aid learning. These images may also be used for publicity or marketing materials produced by Morley College, both online and in print. You will have the opportunity to either confirm or decline consent to being filmed or photographed.
What you will need for your class
Clothes that allow ease of movement, hence a t-shirt and tracksuit bottoms are adequate.
A bottle of water.
A notebook and pen

The students can continue their training by re- joining the Intermediate Class to progress further.
