What you will learn
A fresh and spontaneous approach to working directly on to silks using silk paints and gutta. Initially students will mark make freely on paper to generate designs using paint and ink. From that we will work directly on silk pieces to practice using gutta resist and silk paints. Students will then progress to 36 inch/90 cms hemmed silk scarves in both chiffon and habotai. These are fixed in the studio and will be ready to wear home! There will be charge for the silk squares in the studio - around £10 each.
By the end of the course you will be able to
- Generate interesting visual ideas and designs
- Set up and work directly on to silks
- Control the application of gutta and silk paints
- Fix colour using an iron
Class format and activities
Students will be listening to the tutor presentation, explanation, demonstration, in group and one to one learning. Mark making on paper to generate ideas an practicing the control of gutta and silk paint. Setting up a frame and pinning out silk and then working directly with appropriate applicators. Finally, fixing colour with an iron.
In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.
What you need to know before you enrol
The class is situated on the second floor of the Nancy Seear Building. There is partial disabled access via a stair lift. Please contact ALS on: 0207 450 1972 or Art & Design Admin on: 0207 450 1934 before enrolling if you have any mobility support needs.
What you will need for your class
Notebook or sketchbook and pencil, a cloth apron and your favourite paint brushes.
