What you will learn

Develop a range of off loom bead weaving skills on this evening jewellery workshop. Suitable for beginners or students with experience who are looking to extend their skills with the help of an experienced tutor.

By the end of the course you will be able to

  • use a range of bead weaving stiches and pattern including: Netting, Right Angle Weave, Peyote
  • have a greater understanding of seed beads, types available and sizes and when to use them
  • Create a range of beaded jewellery, showcasing the different techniques taught

Class format and activities

This is a practical class. Each week we will go through new stitches and patterns, including Netting, Right Angle Weave, Peyote, Square Stitch and Spiral Stitch. You will create a practice piece of your choice using the materials provided and the skills demonstrated during the session. By the end of the term you will have a set of samples demonstrating the different stitches and patterns.
During the course there will be ongoing discussions and examples on bead weaving techniques, the appropriate threads & findings to use.
There will be an emphasis on sharing knowledge and experience, through discussion, show and tell and group crit.
The tutor will facilitate group discussions and work with the students one-to-one and in groups.

In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.

Entry requirements

No previous experience of jewellery making is necessary. Enthusiasm is an asset!

What you need to know before you enrol

This is a practical course and will require hand skills for working with threads and weaving
techniques. Glasses or optical loupes may be needed for intricate work.

What you will need for your class

You will be provided with the basic materials & equipment for each session, but as your skills progress it may be worth bringing any beads you have to incorporate into designs created during the course. If you wish to progress with the techniques you are learning on the course a comprehensive list of suggested tools and materials will be provided during the first session, along with suppliers. Hand-outs for each new technique covered will be available, but a notebook & pen is strongly recommended

What you can do next

The course provides an excellent start to off loom beaded jewellery making or a refresher or taster of new techniques. This is a progressive course and we recomend you continue onto VJE157C- Beaded Jewellery workshop in term 3, where we will be working with chain maille & beads with wire.
