What you will learn
Develop your ability to put harmonic concepts into practice at the keyboard. This course is ideal for those tackling the higher music theory grades (Grades 6-8) as well as for those who want to develop their general musicianship. You will develop your knowledge of chord positions in a practical context, and put them to use in harmonisation exercises, figured bass and more.
By the end of the course you will be able to
- Construct seventh chords in major keys
- Understand and apply principles of voice-leading to seventh chord progressions
- Play from a variety of notations, including chord symbols, Roman numerals and figured bass
- Transpose material to a variety of keys
- Develop understanding of key relationships and modulation
Class format and activities
Each student will have their own keyboard with headphones. The classes will consist of instruction and demonstration as well as individual practice time and feedback. There will also be some group playing and discussion.
In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.
You will need to have elementary keyboard skills (1-2 years) and knowledge of music theory at Grade 5 or above.

You will need to have access to a keyboard or piano outside of the class to practice between lessons

Notebook, pencil and eraser, and manuscript paper for music notation.
