What you will learn
Keep fit with the Charleston! Learn to dance the Shorty George!
A fun, vintage, dance-fit class. Put a spring in your step. Learn short, enjoyable routines using steps from the 1920s and 1930s. We’ll be dancing to music from the hot jazz and swing eras, by Fats Waller, Cab Calloway and many more…
By the end of the course you will be able to
- Be able to dance a repertoire of steps from the 1920s and 1930s
- Be able to dance a variety of short choreographies to different pieces of music
- Have developed coordination, body-awareness and style
- Be more knowledgeable about vintage jazz music
- Feel fitter
Class format and activities
A warm up followed by an introduction to new steps in isolation and then in the context of the sequence. Dancing the routine to music of different tempos.
It is expected that we will learn at least 2 choreographies per term.
Constructive and supportive feedback from your tutor will help you succeed during the class.
A reasonable level of fitness is necessary. Please be aware that the Charleston in particular is somewhat demanding on knees and ankles. The ability to learn sequences of moves.
What you need to know before you enrol
This is quite a brisk-paced class. In order to use the dance as an aid to fitness, the routines must be learned fairly quickly.
What you will need for your class
Flat dance shoes.
Smooth soles – some cushion is recommended. Eg plimsoles with smooth soles. No trainers or any sole designed to grip the floor.
