Sevillanas Beginners & Improvers
What you will learn
Develop your understanding and performance of the first two verses of the evocative and fun-filled Spanish Sevillanas. We will study a minimum of one verse per evening. No previous dance experience needed. Suitable for Beginner and Improver students (any dance style).
By the end of the course you will be able to
- Demonstrate basic Sevillanas arm movements, footwork and turns with improved confidence.
- Recognise and demonstrate the structure of a copla of Sevillanas.
- Be able to recognise and begin to demonstrate Sevillanas rhythms through clapping and stamping
- Show development of dance skills in co-ordination, strength, flexibility and stamina
- Perform the first two verses of Sevillanas with confidence and an attempt at an authentic style.
Class format and activities
Participate in practical exercises and patterns of movement demonstrated by your tutor. Learn sequences through repetition of action to master basic features of the technique. You will be responding (through movement and rhythmic accompaniment) to a selection of Sevillanas music. You will be practising stamping, clapping and movement sequences with your fellow students so as to share your learning experience. You will have the chance to discuss your learning with your tutor and with fellow students. You will learn and be able to perform a minimum of the first two verses of Sevillanas.
Constructive and supportive feedback from your tutor will help you succeed during the class.
This course is open to beginner and improver level flamenco and dance students. You should be aware that it is a practical class and so you will need to be able to participate in the physical activities planned to the best of your ability.
What you need to know before you enrol
A key aim of the course is to help you develop your strength, flexibility and stamina in relation to Sevillanas. You will need to engage in activities designed to help this learning process. You should be aware that it is a practical class and so you will need to be able to participate in the physical activities planned to the best of your ability. You should consider your fitness level in terms of whether you will be able to complete two hours’ continuous exercise. Please note: your tutor will be pleased to adapt exercises and activities to suit particular needs.
Photography and film recording of class activities may be used in order to aid learning. These images may also be used for publicity or marketing materials produced by Morley College, both online and in print. You will have the opportunity to either confirm or decline consent to being filmed or photographed
What you will need for your class
Shoes with a small heel, preferably Cuban heels (no stilettos). Shoes must be securely attached to feet. Flamenco shoes (women) and flamenco boots (men) would be ideal.
Long, flared skirt (women)/ trousers that allow for movement (men)
A fitted top (no baggy sweatshirts, please)
A notebook for keeping a journal record of learning
Bottled water (screw-top)
