Introduction to Flamenco Dance
What you will learn
From stamping feet to clapping hands and swishing skirts, this course provides a fun and informative introduction to the basics of Flamenco dance. Through the study of a selection of core flamenco rhythms, you will gain an insight into this passionate and energetic dance form. You will also develop your stamina, strength and co-ordination through the study of flamenco arms, footwork and turns. Suitable for complete beginners!
By the end of the course you will be able to
- Demonstrate basic flamenco arm movements, footwork and turns.
- Recognise one or more of the core flamenco rhythms.
- Reproduce one or more of the core flamenco rhythms through clapping and stamping.
- Show development in your dance skills of co-ordination, strength, flexibility and stamina.
- Perform a short, simple flamenco dance.
Class format and activities
Participate in practical exercises and patterns of movement demonstrated by your tutor. Learn sequences through repetition of action to master basic features of the technique. You will be responding (through movement and rhythmic accompaniment) to a selection of flamenco rhythms (e.g. Tangos & Rumba). You will be practising stamping, clapping and movement sequences with your fellow students so as to share your learning experience. You will have the chance to discuss your learning with your tutor and with fellow students You will learn a short, simple flamenco dance sequence to perform at the end of the session.
Constructive and supportive feedback from your tutor will help you succeed during the class.
This course is suitable for complete beginners. You should be aware that it is a practical class and so you will need to be able to participate in the physical activities planned to the best of your ability. Your tutor is very happy to make any adjustments to exercises set to meet particular physical or learning needs.
What you need to know before you enrol
A key aim of the course is to help you develop your strength, flexibility and stamina in relation to flamenco dance. You will need to engage in activities designed to help this learning process. Therefore, you should consider your fitness level in terms of whether you will be able to complete two hours' continuous exercise. Please note: your tutor will be pleased to adapt exercises and activities to suit particular needs.
Photography and film recording of class activities may be used in order to aid learning. These images may also be used for publicity or marketing materials produced by Morley College, both online and in print. You will have the opportunity to either confirm or decline consent to being filmed or photographed.
What you will need for your class
Shoes with a small heel, preferably Cuban heels (no stilettos). Shoes must be securely attached to feet. Flamenco shoes (women) and flamenco boots (men) would be ideal.
Long, flared skirt (women); trousers that allow for movement (men).
A fitted top (no baggy sweatshirts, please).
A notebook for keeping a journal record of learning.
Bottled water (screw-top).
