What you will learn

Would you like to explore your voice and acquire some vocal skills? Have you ever wished you could read music to learn songs more rapidly? In this course for beginners in singing and music theory, you will have the opportunity to experiment with your voice and to learn songs as part of a group. You will also begin reading notes on a score and listening differently to the music around you.

By the end of the course you will be able to

  • Read a music score, understanding the names of the notes, duration, tempo, dynamics etc
  • Sing simple melodies, using basic vocal technique (breathing, projection, singing legato etc)
  • Be able to sight-read very simple melodies using tonic sol-fa.
  • Sing with more confidence in a group and on your own

Class format and activities

Vocal warm-ups and basic technical exercises.
Music theory for beginners: reading notes, counting the beats, learning the basic performance instructions (dynamics, articulation etc).
Beginners' sight-reading: pitching and counting notes.
