What you will learn
This course qualifies you to work in a supervisory role within a nursery and is the minimum qualification necessary to open your own nursery. The course requires a placement in a childcare setting for 12 hours per week and you will be assessed in the workplace by a qualified assessor. You will study in detail different theories of learning that underpin the Early Years Foundation Framework and how to develop children in each of these areas, including social and emotional development and emergent literacy skills. Progress into supervisory positions and onto the Level 4 Diploma in Early Years Education. Please note that to fully qualify at Level 3 you will need Level 2 or equivalent in English and maths. This course does not provide any UCAS points.
By the end of the course you will be able to
- Support healthy development of children through exercise and nutrition
- Understand and follow current legislation in relation to childcare settings
- Promote children's personal, social and emotional development
- Support children with additional needs
Class format and activities
You will be working in a group or individually on written and reading tasks, projects and interactive activities. You will participate in discussions on relevant topics. You will also be observed and assessed in your placement.
In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.
You will need to undertake an assessment to ensure that you are working at Level 2 English. In order to be counted in ratios at Level 3 in the workplace, you must have GCSE English and Maths at Grade C or above. This is not an entry requirement of this course, however, there is an expectation that you will be working towards achieving this so you must demonstrate the required level in both English and maths at assessment as well as your commitment to undertaking GCSEs where necessary.
You will need to arrange your own placement in a childcare setting and have a current DBS check. These must be in place before the course starts.
Please note that we only accept online applications for this course.
What you need to know before you enrol
This is a demanding course which requires 12 hours a week at your placement, 6 hours tuition time plus additional tutorial time, and homework and independent study of up to 10 hours per week. We therefore expect students to be able to demonstrate sufficient commitment to and interest in the course. Please note this qualification does not provide any UCAS points.
What you will need for your class
Pen, paper, folder, laptop or mobile device to take notes if relevant.
What you can do next
You can go straight into employment or further study in childcare. This course should enable your career progression towards positions that require qualification at Level 3 - usually at a supervisory level in the children and young people’s workforce.
Upon achievement of this qualification you will gain your licence to practise and you will be able to enter the workforce as Early Years Educators.
You can progress into various job roles in the statutory, voluntary or private sectors such as:
• Assistant in Children's Centres
• Practitioner in nursery schools
• Practitioner in reception classes in primary schools
• Pre-school worker
