Brian Bertscher started ballet classes at the age of seven in Johannesburg, South Africa. He joined the Royal Ballet School in London at the age of 17, which included studying the Cecchetti ballet system to the Advanced exam.
From 1964 to 1979 Brian was a member of the Royal Ballet and a soloist with the Sadlers Wells Royal Ballet. He went on take the Professional Teachers Training Course at the Royal Academy London.
Most recently Brian danced in The Elders Project at Sadlers Wells (2014) and The Queen Elizabeth Hall (2015.) The Elders Project was picked out by the Daily Telegraph as ‘the best dance moment in 2014’ and received an Olivier Award nomination for Outstanding Achievement in Dance.
Brian was Professor for Classical Ballet at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen, Germany between 1980-2010. In addition to his responsibilities for the students' ballet education and training, he also regularly choreographed school performances.
His other teaching experience includes work with the Wuppertal Tanztheater under Pina Bausch, for Deutsche Oper am Rein, Dusseldorf as well as in Bonn and Dortmund. He has also worked as guest teacher with schools and ballet companies in Taiwan, Japan, Venezuela, France, England, South Africa and North America.
Since 2010, Brian has taught and choreographed for Dance For All in Cape Town, South Africa.
