Jazz legend visits Morley College
During the two-hour event, which will be recorded and broadcast at a later date on BBC Radio 3’s Jazz Line Up programme, Claire Martin OBE will interview the revered artist about his celebrated 70-year career as an international jazz singer.
An expert panel made up of some of the most respected names in British jazz, including Dame Cleo Laine, Ian Shaw, Norma Winstone and Peter Churchill, will be on hand to discuss Murphy’s work, methods and career highlights.
Murphy will also be giving a special performance of a selection of songs from his incredible repertoire, accompanied by jazz pianist George Mesterhazy, and will be sharing some of his top tips for budding jazz singers.
A six-time Grammy nominee, Mark Murphy was discovered by Sammy Davis Jr in 1953 at a jam session in Murphy's hometown of Syracuse, New York. Davis immediately spotted Murphy’s talent, and asked him to join him on stage for a show that night. Since then Murphy has gone on to enjoy a prolific international career, releasing over 40 recordings in the past 40 years. He has attracted numerous accolades from reviewers and peers alike, with the New York Post labelling him “the hipsters’ hipster” and Ella Fitzgerald declaring him her “equal”.
Andrea Brown, Director of Music at Morley College says: “Having such a legendary musician within the College is an inspiration for our students and staff, and to our continued interest in Jazz education.”
Meet Mark Murphy will take place on Monday 30 January from 11am – 1pm at Morley College. Tickets are free to Morley students and £10 to members of the public, but advance booking is required. To book a ticket please email mmm@morleycollege.ac.uk.
