Morley College helps students achieve university places
Over 100 students took part in the event, having successfully completed and passed their courses and gained the entry requirements needed to progress on to university.
The Access to HE programme at Morley offers a wide variety of subject pathways including Music, Media, Humanities, Social Work, Social Science, Midwifery, Nursing and Health, and is aimed at providing students with the necessary knowledge and skills to move on to higher education. Successful completion of the programme is viewed as an equivalent to an A-level or vocational qualification.
To date, the current crop of Access graduates has received over 170 place offers from universities including Goldsmiths, LSBU, Middlesex, City, Westminster, Greenwich, Queen Mary, Leeds, Birkbeck, Kent and Southampton - an amazing achievement given the exceptionally high demand for university places this year.
Access course leader, Julia Wood explains, “Morley has built a strong relationship with many of the universities and has a good understanding of the subjects and courses they offer. Individual pathway leaders’ are able to help each of our students choose and apply for the courses that support their ambitions”.
Whilst many Morley Access students come from the UK others have come from further afield, having starting their education in the Caribbean, Africa, South America or other European countries. In addition, many students on the Access programme have also been out of education for a number of years and initially find returning to study a daunting prospect.
Streatham resident and media student Takhona Nhlengethwa is originally from South Africa and has one daughter. She decided to embark on an Access Diploma in Media Studies after several years out of education, and has now successfully gained a place to study Film Media at the University of Greenwich.
She says: “It was 8 years since I was last in a classroom and I was a little nervous after being out of the loop for so long. However, the College made me feel welcome and really introduced education back into my life. The course was great and a real stepping stone in my future career. It was fantastic to complete it within a year on a part-time basis and also make a lot of new friends.”
The Access to HE programme at Morley is now accepting applications for 2011/12 enrolments. For further information visit our Access to Higher Education section.
