Celebrated artist Maggi Hambling CBE presented prizes to six talented amateurs at the launch of Morley Gallery's newest drawing exhibition last night.

The Rootstein Hopkins Foundation Drawing Exhibition, taking place from 11 May - 11 June at Morley Gallery, celebrates the artistic talents of the capital's adult learners. Over 211 drawings were submitted to the exhibition, and of these, 110 of the very best entries have been chosen for display by a distinguished panel of judges.

Of these, six entries have been selected for special prizes totalling over £2,000, as announced by Maggi Hambling CBE at yesterday's launch party.

Stephanie Greenslade of Morley College won the Drawing from the Imagination prize for her factastically intricate depiction of ‘Mother Autumn', while the Drawing for Design prize went to Sumi Perera of Kensington and Chelsea College for her piece ‘Shattering the Glass Ceiling II'

Unable to choose between two exceptional entries, the judges named both Deborah Robins of the Mary Ward Centre and Rouhi Peck of Putney School of Art & Design joint winners in the hotly-contested Drawing from Observation category.

Harry Bridgman of the Mary Ward Centre and Konrad Gabriel of the Prince's School of Drawing were highly commended for their entries.

Visitors to the exhibition will still have the opportunity to nominate their favourite drawing for the People's Prize, an award of £200 which will be presented to the exhibitor with the most votes at the end of the exhibition.

The Rootstein Hopkins Foundation Drawing Exhibition is generously supported by the Rootstein Hopkins Foundation and aims to promote the importance of drawing and learning throughout adult life.

As Deborah Robins, joint winner of the Drawing from Observation category says: "I originally studied life drawing as part of my degree, and after 30 years decided I wanted to get back into it. I think as an adult you take learning seriously, as you understand that time is short. Taking the course has given me the beginnings of a new career just when I needed it and has really boosted my confidence - I don't think I would have got back into drawing otherwise. I now feel that drawing is something I can do, and be in control of to a certain extent. It's a very emotional experience for me, and can make me feel elated."

During 14 - 20 May visitors to the exhibition will also be able to take part in a number of other events as part of Morley College's Adult Learners Week celebrations. These include a chance to make your own creative mark with the Morley ‘Pocket Garden' Mural, join in the fun on our Family Fun Day; or try your hand at something new, with taster sessions ranging from Reflexology and T'ai Chi to Samba Percussion, paper making and Zumba.
