Kara Tointon paid a visit to Morley College’s Lewington Centre last week as part of her work as ambassador for adult literacy charity, Quick Reads.

Best known for her role in Eastenders, and former winner of Strictly Come Dancing, Kara's visit coincided with the launch of a new set of Galaxy Quick Reads; bite-size books by renowned authors which are written in a bid to encourage more people to get into reading.

During the visit, Morley’s Entry Level English students heard about Kara's struggle with reading and her diagnosis of dyslexia at the age of seven. Now a self-proclaimed 'bookworm', Kara commended the group on their progress and encouraged the students to continue with their reading.

One participant said: "It was great to meet such a laid back lady who empathised with us because she's been there herself."

Another learner commented: "I really respected the way Kara shared her thoughts about dyslexia, it made me less shy about speaking out."

Morley’s Literacy Organiser, Janet Harper said: "It was lovely having Kara join the group for one of our classes. The students had a list of questions to ask her and everyone was inspired by her journey. She was the perfect visitor and is welcome back any time."

The group were also presented with copies of the latest releases in the Quick Reads series.
