This concert marks International Women’s Day and is in aid of Womankind Worldwide, an international development charity that works towards a world where woman are equal, respected and proud.

In Afghanistan,  Womankind supports two local partner organisations to:

  • Provide a safe place for education and vocational training for women

  • Raise awareness of women’s human rights
  • Provide legal aid to women survivors of domestic violence.

All funds raised will be donated to support Womankind Worldwide’s programme for Afghan women. To find out more, go to www.womankind.org.uk.

Dr John Baily and Veronica Doubleday are renowned musicians and ethnomusicologists who began their musical research in Afghanistan in the 1970s.  After 2001, John established a Tradition Bearers’ Music Programme in Kabul on behalf of the Aga Khan Music Initiative for Central Asia. Veronica specialises in women’s music and Persian-language folk music.

John is Emeritus Professor of Ethnomusicology and Head of the Afghanistan Music Unit at Goldsmiths College, University of London, while Veronica is a visiting lecturer at The University of Brighton’s Faculty of Design. Between them, they have authored a wealth of publications about Afghan music as well as recording numerous CDs and DVDs. They have given concerts of Afghan music all over the world.
