Landing Gallery: Studio Photographs by Harry Jacobs – Portraits from Brixton & Stockwell

‘Harry Jacobs set up his portrait photography business in Brixton in the 1950’s.  He started by touting for work, door-to-door, along the Coldharbour Lane and Somerleyton Road.  Many of his clients were from the Caribbean, West Africa and South Asia and by the time he opened a permanent studio in Stockwell, he was already the de facto photographer to this neighbourhood.  His photographic archive, rescued when the studio closed in 1999 provides an unselfconscious record of a mid to late 20^th century South London.’

This exhibition has been made possible by the generous loan of original work from Lambeth Archives.
