Morley Gallery: 'Safe In Our Hands' an exhibition by the children & young people of Kids Company
The arts at Kids Company are a source of inspiration and hope for our children and young people as well as an opportunity to process traumatic memories. Kids Company believes that the practice of art in the context of compassionate human relationships is a powerful buffer against the impact of abuse and neglect.
For many of our children and young people, daily life is heavily punctuated by a sense of dislocation and uncertainty about the future. This exhibition of portraiture, sound installation and sculpture showcases their immense talent and gives a profound insight into their feelings around emerging self identity and the need to feel safe and belong.
This event forms part of Morley College's Diversity Month celebrations.
Kids Company
Founded in 1996 by Camila Batmanghelidjh, Kids Company provides practical and emotional support to 14,000 vulnerable children and young people. Many of those we support have experienced chronic trauma and neglect. Last year 547,000 children in England were referred to Social Services because their circumstances were a serious cause for concern. Because capacity is so limited over 90% received no statutory protection.
Kids Company’s services are delivered across four street level centres; an early intervention therapy house treating extreme trauma, an over 16s education academy, a community centre drop in for young children and their carers and an education centre for excluded young people. Kids Company also work in 40 inner-city schools serving deprived communities and create safe, loving family environments providing individually tailored support to meet the needs of each child. Kids Company never give up on a child and do whatever it takes to ensure they have a safer childhood and a positive future.
In 2007 Kids Company was awarded the Liberty and Justice Human Rights Award.
