Dance information

Class levels

Most of our dance classes are separated into levels to enable you to progress from beginner to advanced at your own pace.

If you’re unsure which level would be best for you and would like some advice, come along one of our open days or drop-in sessions, or give us a call. Level 2 & 3 courses will need tutor approval before enrolling, and some may also require you to audition.

Vocational training for dance students and dance teachers

For those wishing to teach in the post-16 educational and community sector we offer the nationally recognised Teacher Training: Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTTLS) qualification. This qualification is mandatory for anyone intending to teach dance to adults. Entry is by interview and initial assessment.

OCNLR Accredited Adult Learning Programme

We offer a number of dance courses accredited by the Open College Network London Region (OCNLR) for those interested in vocational study and professional development. Students wishing to join an accredited course must attend an audition/advice session to gain tutor approval before enrolling.

There is an additional fee for OCNLR registration and fees vary depending on the credit value of the course (anywhere between £12 - £100). This is payable at the time of examination entries, usually by the end of April of the examination year. Fees also include additional end of term tutorial and in some cases extra tutor time in order to complete log books.

Dance clothing and footwear

Please wear clothing that is comfortable, does not restrict your movement and allows you to adapt to changes in your body temperature. Short skirts or tight jeans are not suitable for dance courses.

Footwear varies according to the course, and in some courses you may be required to work in bare feet. The course outline contains advice on clothing and shoes but if you are not sure what is appropriate please check with your tutor or the dance administrator before purchasing footwear. Due to the specialist nature of the dance studio floors, outside shoes are not allowed to be worn in the studios.

Health and safety

You are advised to seek medical advice if you have any history of injury or illness and inform your tutor, before starting your course, of any such condition (past or present) and the nature of any physical activity that you should avoid.

Students returning to dance after a break should also inform the tutor if they lack a good level of fitness, and work gently at first. For your own safety and well-being, it is usually not possible to start courses after the third week of term unless you have the appropriate previous experience and the subject tutor has agreed after a class assessment. On accredited courses it may not be possible to commence after the first term unless you have agreement from the Curriculum Manager and tutor.

For dance classes you are expected to arrive early, be changed, and ready to start on time. If you are more than 15 minutes late you may not be allowed to join in the session as you will have missed the warm-up and therefore be at risk of injury. For additional health and safety reasons, you must not eat, drink (water only is allowed) or chew gum in classrooms or studio spaces.
