African and Caribbean Literature
AA look at the Atlantic Triangle from a literary point of view. The modern commercial world in the Western hemisphere was based on the relationship between Africa, The Americas and Europe. This triangle has always also had a cultural expression, it is this cultural triangle that we will examine. Chinua Achebe's celebrated novel is set during the European scramble for Africa in the late nineteenth century. It reveals Igbo culture before colonialism and the disruptive impact of the British colonial authority. Jamaica Kincaid's non-fiction account "A Small Place" depicts her Caribbean island and its position in a commercial region dominated by the USA. Caryl Phillips' novel "Crossing the River" completes the triangle, one section of this novel follows the fate of an ex-slave in the 19th century who returns to Africa. We will explore how these writers help us to understand the Atlantic Triangle. The first 30 minutes will be a book club where students will discuss their current reading with each other and the tutor.
