Based on the ideas in Tomoko Nakamishi’s book, 'Pattern Magic - Stretch', this exciting two day course will encourage you to push the traditional boundaries of pattern cutting using stretch fabrics to create fascinating and unexpected shapes that will enable you to develop your skills and add new dimensions to your garments.

You must have intermediate/advanced level skills to benefit from this course.

What will I learn on the course?

  • Draft a block based on ‘Pattern Magic Stretch’
  • Manipulate the block and carry out a number of exercises
  • Create unusual effects
  • Experiment and further develop your skills

What will I be doing in class?

After examining and discussing a range of examples and samples, the tutor will demonstrate the block drafting technique supported by the use of handouts. The tutor will facilitate group discussions, and work with students one-to-one and in groups with technical advice depending on your needs.

What kind of feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. If you are not pursuing a qualification, you and your tutor will be asked to assess the progress you have made at the end of the course.

Are there any entry requirements?

You must have reached an intermediate level of skill and knowledge in flat pattern cutting, be competent in manipulating shape and producing patterns. Basic sewing skills, good English speaking / reading plus basic numeracy is desirable. This course is not suitable for beginners

Does the course have features I should be aware of (workload, level of fitness, stamina etc)?

Pattern cutting usually involves standing at high tables. Please tell your tutor if this is a problem.

Sewing machines have a foot operated speed control.

The fashion studios are on the first floor of the Nancy Seear Building and there is wheelchair access via a stair-lift.

Please also note: there is no eating or drinking allowed in the fashion studios - no liquids at all are allowed.

What do I need to bring with me to class?

Paper scissors, magic tape, Pritt stick

Calculator, protractor

A basic sewing kit: fabric scissors, pins, tape measure, dressmaker’s carbon paper and a variety of polyester sewing threads

Notepad and 2/3 colour pens, 4H pencils, sharpener and eraser

Stretch fabric for toiling will be available at cost price from your tutor

There are a number of long and short courses focussing on stretch fabrics and intermediate/advanced pattern cutting courses where you could further develop your skills.
