Explore a wide range of stitched, printed and constructed textiles over a whole year for a complete introductory course ; or take terms separately for particular topics. You will be able to develop both samples and finished pieces, and special interests are encouraged. Summer term topics: Shibori resist dyeing techniques with indigo, experimental knitted and woven structures.

What will I learn on the course?

  • Produce beautiful patterned fabric using stitched, clamped and tied Japanese techniques with one of the most ancient dyestuffs, then make it into an artwork or useful textile for the home.
  • Explore basic knit with wire and paper yarns, and make 3D forms, containers and bags using large scale weaving techniques.

What will I be doing in class?

A stimulating practical workshop with group demonstrations and supportive individual tuition. Share your enthusiasm and interest with like minded people and hear about collections and current exhibitions to visit. Work on a tutor guided or independent project.

What kind of feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. If you are not pursuing a qualification, you and your tutor will be asked to assess the progress you have made at the end of the course.

What do I need to bring with me to class?

An overall or apron, and your own pair of rubber gloves is essential for work with dyes. Instruction handouts are provided, but your own notebook and pen will be useful.

What next, after the course ends?

This course offers a pathway to Textiles Foundation and Advanced Textiles Workshops. You may also develop a particular interest in Knit, Dyeing and Print or Basketry which can be taken as specialist courses at Morley.
